A 26-year-old Maroochydore man will face court after he was allegedly busted doing almost 200km/h heading north on the Sunshine Mwy.
The man was allegedly spotted doing 197km/h and 182km/h in a 100km/h zone while weaving between cars by police doing speed enforcement checks on Wednesday, January 3.
He was intercepted and placed under arrest at the scene, and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He will face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 29.
Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol officer in charge, Senior Sergeant Shane Panaho, said in a press conference the man allegedly told police he was speeding because he was late to get to a shift at his work.
“Calling it bloody ridiculous would be an understatement,” Senior Sergeant Panaho said.
He said the rider would not have survived if he had crashed at the speed he was going, and his actions had put himself and every other road user at risk.
“That is a 200 kilometre an hour weapon, which is going to continue and potentially impact others,” he said.
Senior Sergeant Panaho said 19 people have been killed on Sunshine Coast roads in the past 12 months, four of which were motorcyclists.
“You are so vulnerable on a motorcycle … Please, if you have a motorcyclist within your family or group, speak to them about the dangers they face, about the necessity for them to ensure they ride safely,” he said.
“It is very difficult to apologise when you’re no longer here.”
