Man’s bizarre triple-0 call after stabbing neighbour

A colostomy bag will forever serve as a reminder of the night a man was stabbed with a 15cm steak knife by a fellow caravan park resident.

A COLOSTOMY bag will forever serve as a reminder of the night Michael Jennings was stabbed with a steak knife by a fellow caravan park resident.

Adam William Collins, 49, is serving 18 months in prison for the lifelong injuries he inflicted on his Nambour Caravan Park neighbour on March 31 last year.

The pair had been drinking with other residents of the Kalungoor park when they got into an argument about 9pm.

Crown prosecutor Nicola Hamilton said Mr Jennings knocked on Collins’s door and attempted to calm him down before pushing him back inside his caravan.

“The defendant grabbed a knife from inside his caravan and stabbed the complainant once to the stomach,” Ms Hamilton said.

“At first the complainant didn’t realise he had been stabbed, he felt a dull thud followed by a burning feeling.”

Once Mr Jennings realised he had been stabbed he doubled over and applied pressure to the wound.

The court heard the knife perforated his bowel and pancreas and he would have bled to death had he not received treatment.

Collins called triple-0 about 9.15pm telling the operator “If you f---ing come in here again I will f---ing cut your throats open, I just stabbed a person and he needs immediate medical attention”.

He then told the operator “The knife is inside. I don’t want him to die” and “You want to get an ambulance because I put it in six inches”.

Collins reiterated he would stab anyone who came inside his caravan.

Mr Jennings was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he spent nine days receiving treatment, including having his spleen removed.

Ms Hamilton said he was evicted from the caravan park, lost his job and now suffers anxiety as he lives with a colostomy bag.

At Maroochydore District Court on Monday, Collins pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.

He had been in custody for 351 days, since the night of the attack.

Defence barrister Simon Lewis highlighted Collins called for help despite he “seemed to have been raving” on the phone.

He had a limited criminal history.

“He’s overreacted to being pushed back into his van by the complainant,” Mr Lewis said.

“It was not, as my learned friend conceded, premeditated.

“It seemed he had picked the knife up as a result of, what he perceived to be, physical confrontation inside his van – that was no doubt a misconception as a result of his level of his intoxication.”

Collins was sentenced to four years and six months’ imprisonment, suspended after serving 18 months.

He will be eligible for release later this year.
