A rural Queensland pilot driver has been held in custody after he was arrested in Peachester for allegedly holding a woman “prisoner” and trying to make her sign a letter exonerating him of his conduct towards her.
Luke Anthony Plant, 32, was charged with deprivation of liberty after he allegedly prevented a woman from leaving his home on February 28, 2022 in Yuleba, near Roma.
During a bail application in Maroochydore Magistrates Court in May, police alleged that the woman was invited to Mr Plant’s home on February 28.
The court heard the Yuleba father told the woman he was scared he was going to go to jail and allegedly demanded she exonerate him of any wrongdoing.
Police allege that when she was about to leave, Mr Plant “covered her mouth” to prevent her screaming, dragged her into the house and locked all the doors.
Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said it was alleged by police the woman was held as a “prisoner” overnight and made her write the exoneration letter.
The court heard she wasn’t able to leave until the following day but didn’t report the alleged encounter until some time later.
Mr Plant was then arrested while visiting family in Peachester on May 7, 2022.
Duty lawyer Michael Robinson was instructed by Mr Plant that he was helping the woman who had been suffering from bad mental health.
Mr Plant said he told her an argument started because he had been seeing someone else and she even returned to his house after she left.
Mr Robinson said Mr Plant had suffered a brain injury in his earlier years and plainly told his lawyer that he was a man of “limited intelligence”.
Mr McLaughlin said “nothing can be done to stop” Mr Plant with him being on a suspended sentence and bail at the time of offending.
“You are absolutely nowhere near showing cause ... you have shown blatant and arrogant disregard for the suspended sentence,” he said.
Mr Plant’s bail was denied and will appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on June 17, 2022, where he faces one count of deprivation of liberty.
