Kyle Jade Dahlstrom sentenced for Dicky Beach joy ride

Concerned witnesses watched as a father of two’s dangerous joy ride spun out of control when he nearly hit a parked car, careered off the road and ripped off a tyre, a court has heard.

A father of two said he isn’t interested in getting parole after his dangerous drive spun out of control when he nearly hit a parked car, careered off the road and ripped off a tyre.

Kyle Jade Dahlstrom was sentenced to 12 months’ prison in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to seven offences including dangerous driving and evading police.

Police prosecutor James Allen told the court police were following Dahlstrom along Elizabeth St, Moffat Beach with lights and sirens when the 26-year-old sped up and overtook a car on the left side of the single lane road.

Mr Allen said Dahlstrom nearly collided with a parked car and forced the vehicle he had overtaken to slow down when he pushed his way back onto the road.

The court heard Dahlstrom also sped through a 40km/h zone past Dicky Beach shops where a concerned witness said he was going so fast he failed to turn left at the intersection of Beerburrum St and Nicklin Way.

“He failed to negotiate the left turn and spun out, ending up on the footpath before course correcting back into the left lane of Nicklin Way at high speeds,” Mr Allen read from the facts.

Mr Allen said Dahlstrom later entered the Nicklin Way and Caloundra Rd roundabout at “high speeds” before losing control and spinning 180 degrees into oncoming traffic.

“Causing the back right tyre to completely come off the rim,” he said.

Dahlstrom spun the vehicle back around and drove 500m up the road.

Police found the car locked and secured with the engine and its remaining tires “red hot”.

Dahlstrom was later arrested.

The court heard Dahlstrom – who was disqualified from driving and had unlawfully used his former partner’s car – was on parole at the time of the dangerous ride.

Dahlstrom also pleaded guilty to trespassing, stealing and failing to provide a specimen of breath.

Solicitor Rod Morgan said Dahlstrom – who lost a labouring job because of his fatherly commitments – was struggling with unresolved grief leading up to the anniversary of his brother’s death when he relapsed into drug use and committed the crimes.

Mr Morgan said the father of two was motivated to get his life on track and had previously sought help from a drug and alcohol counsellor.

The court heard Dahlstrom had a criminal history including nine disqualified drive charges in the past four years and offences of unlawfully using cars.

“Each time he is released he is caught in the cycle of drugs and reoffending,” Mr Morgan said.

“He attempts to find work, attempts to do what he can to keep himself away from drugs but the pressure of being on parole creates difficulties for him.”

He said the pressure of parole acted as a relapse trigger and asked if the benefit of Dahlstrom’s plea of guilty could be represented in a reduced sentence rather than an earlier parole eligibility date.

The court heard Dahlstrom wasn’t interested in applying for parole and wanted to serve his entire sentence.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said he had never heard the bizarre request.

“He could trick you and apply for parole,” he said to Mr Morgan.

Mr Stjernqvist considered Dahlstrom’s plea of guilty and his time spent in custody.

He imposed a 12-month head prison sentence with a parole eligibility date of November 27, 2022.

The sentence was added to the end of the sentence he was currently serving until May 31, 2023.

He was disqualified from driving for a total of seven years.
