A Nambour man convicted of possessing child abuse material allegedly inappropriately touched a six-year-old girl at a major Sunshine Coast shopping centre, a court has been told.
Jasper Zwicker, 30, sat quietly and unmoving as he appeared on video in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 12, where he applied for bail.
He faces one charge of indecent treatment of a child under 12. He has not entered a plea.
The court was told Mr Zwicker was in the men’s clothing aisle at Kmart at the Sunshine Plaza when he allegedly began staring at two young girls about three metres away from him.
He then allegedly approached them and “stroked” one of the girls on her bottom over her shorts.
Prosecutor James Allen opposed Mr Zwicker getting bail and said a witness saw the alleged incident unfold.
“The objection to bail … indicates that he is a danger to the public, especially children,” Mr Allen said.
He told the court Zwicker was convicted of wilful exposure in 2019 and later of committing an indecent act in 2019 and 2020.
He last faced court in 2022 after he was caught with child abuse material on his phone and sentenced to jail.
He was later released on probation with two months remaining.
A Queensland Corrective Services officer told the court Mr Zwicker had been admitted to the mental health ward at Sunshine Coast University Hospital due to “auditory hallucinations” in August 2023, and remained there until October.
Lawyer Chris Lumme told the court his client was now medicated and always called if he missed a reporting date during probation.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said there was a “very strong case” against Mr Zwicker and refused his bail.
Mr Zwicker was remanded in custody and will return to court on March 15, 2024 for committal mention.
