A man with a history of violent crime headbutted another man on his front lawn after pushing a door into a woman in a drunken attack.

But Geoffrey Bruce Tobler's dedication to his dairy farm job and respect of his employers has helped ensure he will be able to keep working after being sentenced on Thursday in Maroochydore District Court.

The Maleny man was drunk when he went to a Maleny home of a 63-year-old man on the night of April 24 in 2019.

He was met by a woman after he knocked on the front door.

She refused to let him in and the court heard he pushed the door open, striking the woman on the shoulder.

Tobler, 46, was walking across the front lawn when two men came from around the back of the home.

Crown prosecutor William Slack said a struggle ensued, during which Tobler headbutted a 63-year-old man.

The other man tried to intervene and was thrown to the ground by Tobler.

Tobler then pinned the 63-year-old man to the ground before leaving.

The court heard Tobler had 63 offences on his Queensland criminal history as well as history in NSW.

His previous crimes included violence and drugs, such as a 2011 conviction for entering a man's house and holding a knife to his throat.

Tobler was also convicted in 2015 for assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault for an attack on a former partner.

He had already pleaded guilty prior to Thursday's sentence to two counts of common assault and a count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Defence lawyer Mark Dixon said Tobler had been working 40 hours a week at Maleny Dairies for the past year.

Mr Dixon tendered a reference from Tobler's employers that said he was hardworking, trustworthy and an "absolute asset".

He said the men injured in the assault could have let Tobler walk away instead of confronting him.

"Had they remained at the house and not chosen to engage we wouldn't be here dealing with the sentence that we are," Mr Dixon said.

Judge Nicole Kefford said Tobler had demonstrated in the past two years he had turned a corner.

She sentenced him to two years in jail, with immediate release on parole.

"This is an opportunity to rehabilitate in the community and continue along the path you are currently on," Judge Kefford said.
