A Woombye support worker has been told her drunken crash “could’ve been fatal” after she rolled her car into a ditch while using her phone.

Emily Jane Gannon was driving to her partner’s home along Taintons Rd at Woombye on the evening of May 2 when she decided to use her phone, which was on the centre console.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard on Monday the 25-year-old was trying to enter the PIN code to her phone to read a message when she realised her car was drifting onto the opposite side of the road.

Police prosecutor Tara Miles said due to this distraction the Woombye woman’s vehicle rolled into the ditch. She thankfully suffered no injuries.

Officers arrived at the crash site and found the car lying on its side and spoke to Gannon at the scene, who later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.117 per cent.

Gannon, who represented herself, said she was deeply remorseful for her behaviour on that night and for being on her phone.

Magistrate Rod Madsen said she was lucky she wasn’t given a $1200 bill for using her phone, as she was only charged with mid range drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

She pleaded guilty to all of these charges, however was granted a restricted work licence for her job as a support worker.

Mr Madsen said she needed to change her driving behaviour as the crash “could’ve been fatal”.

The magistrate said her driving history was “not great” for a young person as she had been SPER suspended before and was also placed on a “good behaviour option”.

Gannon was fined $1000 and given a head licence disqualification for five months.

Traffic convictions were recorded.
