The forensic crash unit is investigating after a serious crash on the Sunshine Motorway at Peregian Springs which has left one person in intensive care and two others in hospital.
Two elderly people and a man were rushed to hospital with injuries.
Traffic was affected for several hours with emergency services and Queensland Police forensic crash unit at the scene.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said six crews, including the critical care team, were called to the scene at Emu Mountain Arterial Rd following reports of a serious crash at 6.49am on Tuesday.
Queensland Police closed Emu Creek Rd in both directions between Murdering Creek Rd and Sunshine Motorway.
A Sunshine Coast University Hospital spokeswoman confirmed one person was in a critical condition in intensive care as of Tuesday afternoon.
She said another person was in a serious but stable condition and a third in a stable condition.
Queensland Ambulance Service Sunshine Coast operations supervisor Paul Boyd said when crews arrived two cars were on the road and one was down a verge.
He said two elderly people were trapped in on vehicle and an injured man was lying beside his car on the verge.
A fourth person was uninjured.
Mr Boyd said the two elderly people were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with critical injuries and the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Queensland Police Service said in a statement that initial investigations showed three cars collided around 6.50am.
“Police ask motorists to avoid the area and seek an alternate route,” they said.
“The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.”
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said three crews were also called to the scene.
Motorists can expect long delays and are being urged to seek an alternative route.
