A Mooloolaba woman appointed herself as the sheriff when she confronted police and tried to hit an officer involved in arresting two men for a fight on Ocean Street.

Elise Ireland Beeby was fined $200 in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday after she pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer on September 4.

Police prosecutor David Hoffman said officers were trying to arrest two men after a fight in the Maroochydore party precinct when Beeby began interfering.

Senior Constable Hoffman said the 22-year-old, who screamed at police to leave one of the men alone, had been told to stay away from the arrest when she turned her mobile phone camera on and moved toward the men.

A police officer tried to stop Beeby by grabbing her arm when she attempted to strike the senior constable with her left arm.

Constable Hoffman said Beeby was also threatening violence to the second man who was involved in the initial fight.

Beeby was originally charged with assaulting a police officer, but the charge was lessened to obstructing police on Monday.

Duty lawyer Rachel Holland said the Mooloolaba woman had too much to drink on the night and was remorseful for her actions.

“She had way too much to drink and she thought it was a good idea to film her friend getting arrested,” she said.

The court heard the house cleaner was unable to work after suffering a significant shoulder injury.

Ms Holland suggested a fine as an appropriate punishment.

She asked for no conviction to be recorded.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said Beeby was lucky not to have been charged with a more serious offence.

“There is nothing wrong with standing back at a respectful distance and taking a film if you think police are being over the top, but you can’t go in and appoint yourself as the sheriff and start being a nuisance, because that’s what you were doing,” he said.

Mr McLaughlin urged Beeby to “grow up”.

“Basically you came and made a complete pest of yourself getting in the way and even trying to have a go at the man who was fighting with your friend,” he said.

“Really silly stuff.”

No conviction was recorded.
