A 24-year-old Sunshine Coast concreter has faced court after he was busted with a stash of drugs while behind bars on remand.

Little Mountain man Dylan Mark Cheers pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on August 31, 2022 to failing to appear and possessing a dangerous drug.

The court heard Cheers was arrested at a Maroochydore home on May 11, 2022 after he refused to go with police to the Maroochydore station for questioning about another matter.

Then, on May 26, Cheers was in custody on remand at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in Wacol when CCTV footage captured him dropping a package outside a secure unit.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman said 50 orange suboxone strips were found inside.

The drug is typically used to treat opioid addictions, but can be abused when the strips are dissolved and injected.

It was not revealed how Cheers got the drugs while in custody.

He was released on parole a short time later, the court heard, but was arrested at his home on August 15 after he failed to show up to court two weeks earlier on August 1.

“He stated to police that on the day he was due to appear in court, he was working and thought his solicitor was going to appear on his behalf,” Sergeant Ruddiman said.

Defence lawyer Leisel Rogan said her client had always shown up to court prior to the court date on August 1.

She said since her client’s release from prison he had begun working as a concreter since his release and had “gotten his life back on track”.

Cheers was convicted of the drug offence but not further punished and was fined $400 for failing to appear in court.

Convictions were recorded.
