Digby Adam Jakeman in court for drink driving

After hanging out with mates at a popular Maroochydore pub, an apprentice engineer made a generous, but illegal offer to some new friends. Read how it landed him in court.

An 18-year-old engineering apprentice was caught more than three times the limit behind the wheel, after he offered to drive home some “young ladies” from the local pub after a night of drinking.

On September 19, 2022 Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard Maroochy River man Digby Adam Jakeman was pulled over and breath tested on Duporth Ave just after 4am on September 4.

There, he blew 0.167 – more than three times the legal limit.

Police prosecutor James Allen said Jakeman told police he had “five or six” full-strength drinks at the Duporth Tavern.

Defence lawyer Bruce Johnstone told the court his client did not intend to drive home that night, but changed his mind after he offered to drive some “young ladies” home from the pub.

Jakeman had told police at the Maroochydore Watch House they were his friends.

Magistrate Rod Madsen called Jakeman’s decision to drive home “foolish”.

Jakeman pleaded guilty to one charge of drink driving.

He was supported by his mother, who the court heard owns a small business, throughout his court appearance.

He was fined $1050, disqualified from driving for eight months and had a conviction recorded.
