A Coolum woman has been warned she could end up in prison after she used a child to steal from a Sunshine Coast business.

Cheyenne Jade Barr was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday after she pleaded guilty to stealing.

Police prosecutor David Hoffman told the court Barr, her boyfriend and two children had spent an hour at the Coolum Arcade Box before a three-year-old child stole a skateboard.

Senior Constable Hoffman said Barr, who was waiting on the footpath, watched as the child ran into the store and grabbed the skateboard on September 27.

Constable Hoffman said police later found the skateboard at Barr’s address on November 17.

He said Barr had a lengthy criminal history but suggested a fine as an appropriate punishment for the offending.

Magistrate Richard Lehmann said he didn’t agree that fines were appropriate for the offending that saw Barr “use” the child to steal.

Unrepresented Barr said she didn’t know what to say to change Mr Lehmann’s mind.

Mr Lehmann explained the impacts of stealing to Barr.

“If people go and steal stuff the business needs to factor in that loss so … the community has got to pay higher prices,” he said.

Mr Lehmann said the 24-year-old had previously been given probation orders and he refused to impose a sentence that prioritised rehabilitation.

He warned she would end up in prison if she continued to reoffend.

Barr has a year to complete the community service.

Convictions were recorded.
