Cameron James Crossan assaulted a police officer during his violent, alcohol-fuelled tirade outside Coast pub

A man who just turned 18 has copped his punishment after threatening to rip a police officer’s throat out during his night out on the town.

A man has copped his punishment after threatening to rip a police officer’s throat out during a night out on the town.

Cameron James Crossan had been yelling abuse at police, security guards and the public in the early hours of September 4 when he assaulted an officer in Maroochydore.

Crossan, who had just turned 18, yelled derogatory terms at police including “why don’t you just f--k off luv you f---ing c--” and I’ll f---ing kill you”.

Police prosecutor James Allen said Crossan was agitated and slurring his words during his violent outburst.

“At the watch house (Crossan) continued violent offensive language towards police saying, ‘I’ll rip your f---ing throat out you skinny f---ot c--t’,” he said.

Police had confronted Crossan after they saw him being removed from the Duporth Tavern by a security guard.

Mr Allen said the 18-year-old was using an aggressive stance with clenched fists when police spotted him and he later challenged security officers to fight while standing on the road.

Before being taken to the watch-house police were organising for Crossan to be taken home by his mother when he told her to go away and walked back towards the security guards with clenched fists.

Police tried to stop Crossan, who hit an officer.

Mr Allen said Crossan raised his right arm and struck down at a male officer who was able to block the blow with his arm.

The court heard Crossan also obstructed police by kicking his legs, hindering a pat down search and pushed back against officer trying to put him in the police car.

Police were also forced to carry Crossan to the watch-house cell when he refused to walk in.

Mr Allen said if Crossan’s erratic, violent behaviour had continued he would have been given thousands of dollars’ worth of fines.

Crossan pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday to five charges including assaulting a police officer, public nuisance near licensed premise and obstructing police.

Duty lawyer Katie Paterson said it was Crossan’s first real experience with alcohol and while he couldn’t remember his behaviour, he was extremely remorseful.

Ms Paterson said Crossan was diagnosed with multiple disorders including autism and he struggled with emotional awareness, impulse control, and communication.

She suggested fines or a good behaviour bond as an appropriate punishment.

“While he accepts his offending due to his multiple diagnoses his moral culpability is lessened and specific deterrent should be less of a consideration then it would be in ordinary circumstances,” she said.

Mr Allen said he would accept that if he wasn’t drunk.

She said the year 12 student was so embarrassed by his offending he hadn’t drank any alcohol since.

Magistrate Maxine Baldwin told the Caloundra resident he would have to live with his difficulties and not put himself in situations where he could act out.

She said given Crossan’s young age and disabilities she was going to give one of the lowest penalties she had ever given for assaulting a police officer.

Crossan was sentenced to a $1000 good behaviour bond for 18 months.

No conviction was recorded.
