A Brassall man helped abduct a stranger while hunting for his sister-in-law’s boyfriend in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, a court has heard.

Alan James Glen Collins drove to Beerwah from Morayfield on January 12 last year hoping to confront his relative’s boyfriend over claims the man was allegedly being abusive towards her.

Maroochydore District Court heard on Tuesday the 30-year-old, who pleaded guilty to deprivation of liberty, possessing a weapon and possessing a pipe, was on the hunt for the boyfriend who went by the name “Pip”.

Crown prosecutor Alex Stark said a 31-year-old man, unknown to Collins, happened to be walking in the street at the time when the man was asked if he knew “Pip”.

Despite saying he did not know Pip, Mr Stark said Collins instructed a friend to grab the stranger, who was then kicked, punched, headbutted and pushed into the backseat of their car.

The Brassall man, who has ties to Caboolture, drove the victim away with his friend and spoke about dropping him off in a nearby forestry.

Luckily the victim was able to roll himself out of the car while it was driving at slow speed and flee.

Collins was found the next day sleeping in his car in Caboolture, and told police he hadn’t been to Beerwah “in f---ing ages”.

During a search of his car, officers found a small glass pipe and a taser.

The court heard the 30-year-old had been in custody since January 28 last year.

Collins pleaded guilty to three charges.

Mr Stark said Collins was the one who “directed” the violence to the unfortunate man who happened to be walking in the street.

“None if this wouldn’t of happened if he hadn’t for whatever reason driven to Beerwah to presumably inflict violence on someone,” Judge Glen Cash said.

Defence barrister Nathan Turner said the Brisbane-born father had struggled with drug and alcohol use growing up and spiralled into meth use at the time of the offending.

Collins later told a psychologist “ice was ruining his life”.

The defence barrister rejected claims Collins went to Beerwah to carry out a vigilante act, and told the court it was only to confront “Pip” while in “protective mode” after he was told the man was allegedly abusive to his sister in law.

Judge Cash said it was serious offending where Collins set upon an innocent person he did not know for information so he could confront another man.

“You certainly can’t terrorise other people in that way,” the District Court Judge said.

The Brassall man was sentenced to 254 days in jail which he had already served, and was released on probation for 12 months.
