A night of drinking in Maroochydore ended in disaster for a Buderim cafe worker who crashed into an elderly couple and ended up in hospital.

Brandon Jesse Scotland, 22, was fined $1200 and disqualified from driving for 12 months in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 12 September, 2022.

Police were called to a traffic crash on the intersection of Maroochydore Blvd and the Sunshine Motorway after 8.15pm on July 15, 2022.

Prosecutor James Allen said officers saw a Kia Cerato with extensive rear end damage and a Sonata that also had damage.

Two elderly people were standing with the Kia who told police they were stopped at the traffic lights when they were suddenly rear-ended.

Police spoke to witnesses at the crash who said the Sonata rear-ended the vehicle without any attempts to stop.

Scotland, the driver of the Sonata, was taken to hospital where he had a blood test that revealed a BAC of 0.193.

He told police he had been drinking on Duporth Ave and said he couldn’t remember much about the moments before or after the crash.

Representing himself in court, Scotland said he was “extremely regretful” for his decision.

“It definitely won’t happen again and I don’t want to be back here again,” he said.

Scotland pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and driving without due care and attention.

Convictions were recorded.
