Man allegedly tried to hijack truck on highway during dramatic chase

A Sunshine Coast man who allegedly tried to hijack a truck on the Bruce Highway during a lengthy police chase has been charged with a string of offences and will face court today. SEE THE VIDEO

A Sunshine Coast man who allegedly tried to hijack a truck on the Bruce Highway during a two hour chase with police has been charged with a string of offences after giving himself in to a police negotiator.

Chief Inpsector Jason Overland told media at one point the alleged offender obtained the keys to a truck and managed to immobilise the vehicle on the highway.

“The truck was left on the Bruce Highway immobilised, and that's what caused the traffic holdup.”

During the drama, residents described the man’s vehicle being chased by about 20 police cars as well as the police helicopter.

Chief Inspector Overland revealed police had a ‘containment capability’ which did involve tyre spikes’ but they were not used.

He described the "peaceful resolution," with no injuries to the public or the driver, as "a great outcome for the community".

“The (driver) complied with a surrender plan that was developed with the police negotiator.”

Early Thursday, police revealed they had charged a man following a disturbance at Mountain Creek, which led to a vehicle being tracked to Doonan where the man allegedly surrendered about 2pm.

The 39-year-old Mountain Creek man has been charged with five counts of serious assault police, three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, and one count each of unlicensed driving, going armed so as to cause fear, possess unauthorised medicine, armed robbery, unlawful entry of a vehicle, unlawful possession of a weapon.

He was refused police bail and is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court today, February 15.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed they were called to a home in Mountain Creek about 11.30am following an alleged domestic violence incident.

Police said the man fled the scene.

Police have alleged the man was involved in several dangerous driving incidents on his way to Doonan, where he pulled over and was arrested.

Noosa Summit residents were stopped from entering or leaving the estate while the police operation was under way.

Dominic Macdermott, 18, described the drama to reporters.

"It was quite a big deal because there was 20 police cars all around the street blocking off the road," he said.

"It never gets this crazy around here."
