WHEN Hayley King lost her mum to breast cancer, making Mother's Day mean more was her first step.
She ran side by side with her sisters before making the leap to event organiser of the Sunshine Coast Mother's Day Classic.
The fun run aims to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a cause close to Ms King's heart.
"I saw that the statistics have gone from one in every eight to one in every seven women that will get breast cancer in their lifetime,” she said.
"My mum was one of those, and so was my aunty, so it's a very important part of everyone's lives, because cancer affects all.”
Ms King said raising awareness through the run would help future generations become aware of the signals.
"I have a daughter and my sister has four daughters. Hopefully the fun run can help cancer research so they don't have to go through it,” she said.
Ms King recently decided to recognise the survivors of breast cancer through dedicating the beginning of the event to them.
"We wanted to honour those who have battled it and also the people we've sadly lost to it,” she said.
"So we get everybody to stand to the side as we clap for them when they walk down the middle, and they begin the run for us.
"We also have a minute's silence to remember those that aren't with us any more.”
The Sunshine Coast Mother's Day Classic 2019 fun run will be on Sunday, May 12, from 7.30am-11am at Brightwater Sports Field.
