FOR eight years straight, ambulance service personnel have been voted Queensland's most trusted profession - charged with the responsibility of looking after our greater community.

Now the "ambos” are turning their focus inward and caring for their own in the same fashion.

Pedal for Paramedics is the annual fundraising and awareness-raising ride put together by Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy (qaslegacy.org) where a handful of paramedics from all over the state get together, dust off the old pushbikes and knock over 90km a day.

They ride from station to station, hospital to hospital and community to community in a bid to spread the good word about the work that QAS Legacy is providing to its ambulance colleagues and members.

The legacy scheme is a paramedic-support charity, and relies primarily on many and varied donations, with secondary forms of funding coming from Local Ambulance Committees and an increasing number of financial members of the Legacy Fund.

To date, QAS Legacy is committed to the long-term education of three children from two families after the deaths of uniformed QAS officers, and has paid out more than $16,000 in support and bereavement grants since its inception in 2015.

QAS Legacy has started slowly, but is gaining much-needed momentum thanks to the efforts of these paramedics pounding the pavement year in, year out on their bikes.

This year's 2017 Pedal for Paramedics - Sunshine Coast ride will take the Legacy team from Bribie Island to Noosa Heads and back via Kenilworth.

The course goes up and over several extremely challenging mountain ranges, and as is the case every year, the team will earn its keep by bunkering down in far from luxury digs on the floors and bunks of SES halls and sporting and community clubs throughout the Sunshine Coast.

The team also relies on the much-appreciated support of local clubs, businessess, and the Local Ambulance Committees for donations of all the meals along the way.

In previous years, the team has ridden from Brisbane to Cairns twice, in and around the Far North Queensland tablelands, and has chosen the Sunshine Coast community to spend time in for this year's ride.

If you see the 2017 Pedal for Paramedics - Sunshine Coast riders on their travels between Wednesday, May 3, and Tuesday, May 9, please show your support of our local heroes by sharing a kind word of support on the QAS Legacy Facebook page.
