Pay as little as five cents for delicious, vegan food

Yes, you read it right. You can pay whatever price you want for vegan and gluten-free goodness.

YES, you read it right. You can pay whatever price you want for hearty vegan and gluten-free goodness.

Once a month, Elixiba Restaurant in Maroochydore is allowing customers to decide how much their food is worth, whether it's five cents or $100.

Manager Sarah Hutto said the idea could be intimidating to customers, but they're not here to judge what you pay.

"We have a lot of people say they usually can't afford to eat at our restaurant, so we're just so happy they can enjoy our food for less," she said.

Without "stating the obvious", Sarah said they don't run the events to make money.

"Our business operates on the premise of kindness," she said. "We're just really stoked people are coming."

Offering their set menu for a small price is a great opportunity for customers to experience how great vegan food can be, Sarah said.

"It's a way for people who normally wouldn't even think about eating vegan food to dip their toes in the water."

Regular customer Ajay Singla said the events allowed her to "ease (herself) into a plant-based cuisine without having to fork out a huge amount of money".

"You don't always have that extra bit of money to eat out regularly, so it's great to have that option of a really nice home-cooked meal for a small price," she said.

Elixiba hosts its Pay What You Want events on the last Wednesday of every month. Sarah said they were planning to now run at night instead of during the day to accommodate full-time workers.
