A heavily intoxicated roofer has been dealt a hefty fine after he shouted racial slurs at a group of young people and accused them of hurting his friend.

Police were called to a disturbance outside the Caloundra KFC on Bowman Rd involving Paul Anthony Dyason at 3pm on November 17, 2021.

A witness told police that Dyason, 50, had been harrassing a group of young people sitting on tables outside the fast-food venue.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter said officers spoke to Dyason who was unsteady on his feet and had a strong smell of liquor on his breath.

“The defendant started to speak about an incident that had occured the previous weekend involving a traffic accident and making racial slurs referring to the group at KFC,” Sergeant Potter said.

“He was calling them n----rs and believed they knew something about the incident.”

Whilst being escorted by police, Dyason continued to swear and make racial slurs towards the group.

Police then spoke to members of the group who confirmed Dyason had been harassing them about an incident the previous weekend and appeared to be blaming them for involvement.

“They tried to explain to him that they were not in Caloundra that weekend as they were visiting from Mount Isa,” Sergeant Potter said.

Back at the watch house, Dyason was searched and police found a glass pipe that had residue of methamphetamine.

Duty lawyer Neesha Maidwell said Dyason was working full time and accepted his behaviour was “completely unacceptable”.

“He thought the complainants were involved in an incident where his friend was attacked and had suffered a semi-detached retina, broken fingers and fractured arm,” Ms Maidwell said.

Dyason was fined $1500 for the offences and had to forfeit the glass pipe.
