A Sunshine Coast couple is outraged after their seven-year-old son had his arm broken in a classroom - saying the school has “ghosted” them since the incident.

Jessica and Nathan Girdler have withdrawn their son, who lives with cystic fibrosis, from the school after they separately claim he was bullied with no action.

Their son, Oscar Girdler, had his arm broken in a classroom at Kuluin State School, on September 11.

“He had his arm broken in his classroom and the school has ghosted us,” Mrs Girdler said.

On the day Mr Girdler was called by the school and told Oscar had been hurt dancing but it was “an accident” and he was “probably fine”.

The concerned father went to check on his son at school.

When Mr Girdler arrived at school his son immediately burst into tears.

“He was clearly in pain and could not turn his left arm outwards,” Mr Girdler said.

“Our son said he was in so much pain and heard a bone snap. He said he had fallen over in a class dance party.“

It’s understood another child accidentally stood on Oscar’s arm after the fall and he “heard a bone snap”.

Mrs Girdler said Oscar was “sent to first aid and then told it was a bruise, given an ice pack and sent back to class”.

“We immediately attended Nambour hospital emergency department where we were advised that Oscar had a nightstick injury,” Mrs Girdler said.

The Girdlers were told by medical professionals blunt force would need to have been applied for this kind of bone break.

“I rang the school the next day,” Mrs Girdler said.

“I have started the process for an internal review with the department of education.”

They’ve been told it will take the department of education 20 school days to do an internal review.

Separately, just two weeks prior to the incident Mrs Girdler had emailed the school about the escalating bullying after Oscar and his friend were “pinned down and beaten up and it was dismissed” by a different student.

“It’s an awful environment. Kids are hitting teachers, throwing furniture, beating up other kids and there’s frequent classroom lockdowns,” Mrs Girdler said.

Mr and Mrs Girdler said another student “had been touching kids on the bum and watching kids on the toilet”.

“We were never called by the school or told about this,” Mr Girdler said.

“We would have liked to know and had the opportunity to talk to Oscar about consent, boundaries and his body and his rights.”

The school has ruled the breaking of Oscar’s arm as “accidental”.

“I’ve been contacted by other parents saying their kids saw it happen,” Mrs Girdler said.

Mr Girdler said they called the school the Thursday after Oscar’s arm was broken asking to speak to someone.

They were told they’d receive a call back.

“To date we still have not been contacted by the school.”

An Education Queensland spokesman said Kuluin State School was “committed to providing a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment”.

“Queensland state schools have in place a school Student Code of Conduct to guide appropriate consequences with the management of incidents,” the spokesman said.

“Schools take seriously all incidents of concern.

“Due to privacy, individual student incidents cannot be discussed.

“Students or parents with concerns are encouraged to discuss them directly with the principal or closest regional office.”
