THE knives will be out for Wayne Bennett following the Brisbane Broncos' pathetic finals loss to St George-Illawarra Dragons and so they should be.

Bennett's Broncos were outplayed, out-enthused and out-muscled by a Dragons side who limped into the finals.

Despite a three-game winning streak, Brisbane were thrashed in a finals record on Sunday afternoon.

Brisbane folded weaker than a cardboard box and looked a team who'd read newspapers all week.

The Broncos are in the midst of their worst title drought and keeping Bennett would only continue it.

In my opinion, Bennett's race has run.

Few can doubt the legacy he has left on the game, but I had doubts prior to his second stint at Red Hill following his exit from the Newcastle Knights.

He proved me wrong - or so I thought at the time - guiding the Broncos to within seconds of title No.7.

But the three seasons since have all ended prematurely, with the Broncos being more pretenders, than contenders.

He is a dead man walking.

If rumours are true, he is already gone; with Rabbitohs' coach Anthony Seibold poised to take over.

Hopefully they're concrete plans, and what a breath of fresh air he would be.

Those rumours also say Bennett is Penrith-bound - not sure whether that's the right place.

Bennett is rapidly approaching 70 and en route to the retirement village.

Maybe a backseat role or sole focus on international commitments would ease the load.

But should he get another head coaching gig, I think it will end in tears.
