OPINION: It's time for Daniel's Law in Queensland

QUEENSLAND should hang its head in shame that Daniel's Law - a law for a publicly accessible sex offenders website - already exists in another state.

The Northern Territory introduced legislation in October 2014 to ensure convicted sex offenders in the state would have their name, image, physical description and whereabouts posted on a government website.

Western Australia has had a similar register in place since 2012.

The Queensland Parliament voted down a private member's bill calling for a similar register in November 2014.

It was introduced by Katter's Australian Party MP Shane Knuth.

Jarrod Bleijie, the Member for Kawana, had an excellent chance to push for Daniel's Law when he was attorney-general, but he didn't seem to do this.

And former premier Campbell Newman said at the Day for Daniel Walk in 2014 he wouldn't support laws which might encourage vigilante action against child predators.

This year will mark 13 years since Daniel Morcombe was abducted and murdered while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

The inquest into his disappearance revealed the substantial number of grubs living in our midst.

It's an insult for politicians to protect paedophiles for fear of possible "vigilante action".

Megan's Law, a law in America which the Morcombes say Daniel's Law could be modelled on, doesn't seem to have ignited this kind of reaction.

And let's not forget how much Americans love their guns.

Senator Derryn Hinch, who has gone to jail for his stand on having sex offenders' names revealed, walked with the Morcombes yesterday, the Day for Daniel.

He again made a call for Daniel's Law to become law in Queensland.

It's a call Bruce and Denise Morcombe strongly support, even more so now they have become grandparents.

I'm not aware of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's views on Daniel's Law, so I have asked her office for a response.

Let's hope it is, at last, a good one.
