Dutton needs to learn to show some respect

Well Mr Dutton, public opinion has been on the side of recognising the rights of gay people to marry for quite some time.

SHOULD business leaders be free to speak out on social issues?

It seems the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton doesn't believe in freedom of speech, since he has made it clear he rejects the sentiment of a letter signed by 30 CEOs from some of Australia's largest companies in support of a free vote in parliament on same-sex marriage.

Mr Dutton even made a homophobic slur against one signatory, Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, saying that the openly gay Mr Joyce should "get back to his knitting”.

Such a comment is born out of a lack of respect, which is why recognising same-sex marriage and gay rights is so important.

Mr Dutton also added that business owners should stay out of politics rather than bullying the government and claimed "elected decision makers”, such as he were better placed to make a decision on the matter.

Well Mr Dutton, public opinion has been on the side of recognising the rights of gay people to marry for quite some time, so how about your government just get on with it and, as the CEOs suggest, have a free vote in parliament.

Let the elected decision makers decide.
