Noosa teenager Alexa Leary has on Monday entered her 17th night in an induced coma after a horror biking accident in Pomona.

The Sunshine Coast triathlete was out training when she clipped the wheel of another rider causing her to lose control of her bike.

Leary was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious condition on July 17.

The successful triathlete who only 10 months ago embarked on her professional career, suffered major injuries such as a fractured scapula, shoulder blade, wrist, ribs, a collapsed lung and major nerve damage.

Her father Russell Leary said an eight-day Covid-19 lockdown for southeast Queensland has made matters even harder.

“I’m sat in a hotel in Brisbane in lockdown as I look out the window to the hospital where my daughter is lying,” he said.

“It’s not an easy thing to do.”

The hospital have allowed Ms Leary’s mother, Belinda, into the Hospital for a short period of time during the lockdown.

Mr Leary said there are small signs of improvement.

“She keeps fighting and her condition now is that she is showing signs of recognition and connection,” he said.

“She can’t speak but she can move her eyes, look at you, grab your wrist and give it a squeeze.

“She actually grabbed her mum the other day for a kiss and ended up putting her in a headlock which was a good laugh.”

Mr Leary said the support has been unbelievable and has really helped them to stay strong.

“We’ve had people all over the world reach out to us by sending videos, letters, prayers and so much more which has been really great,” Mr Leary said.

“The hospital staff here have been absolutely fantastic in supporting us and Alexa and we can’t thank them enough.”
