Over a morning cuppa and breakfast a retired Tewantin couple spotted what was identified as a highly venomous and rare snake taking a dip in their backyard pool.
Stuart and Kerryn Gray were at home last Friday when the rough scaled snake was spotted perched on their pool pump.
Ms Gray said at first they thought it was a keelback or whip snake but were shocked to find out it was a far more deadly breed.
She said they called Noosa Snake Catcher Luke Huntley who was surprised to find the snake had found its way into the Tewantin backyard.
“He thought it was a keelback at first but then he said it was very dark for a keelback.

“He lifted it up with his hook and got so excited when he realised it was a rough scaled snake.
“We couldn’t understand why he was so excited.”
“He said it was a really venomous snake and we thought ‘oh great’.
“He said he was going to have to go and get a stronger bag.”
Mr Huntley said a rough scaled snake was a rare find in that area.
“I was definitely not expecting a rough scale in the middle of Tewantin that’s for sure,” he said.
“Usually it’s a whip snake or a keelback.
“I was so lucky to get this one.”
