Services in the rapidly growing Caloundra South precinct appear to be expanding with a proposal for a new ambulance station lodged with the state’s planning body.

Plans for a new 24-hour ambulance station in the proposed new emergency services and health precinct were lodged with Economic Development Queensland by consultants for the state’s Queensland Ambulance Service and Department of Health.

The proposal, on the corner of Festival St and Splendour St, includes a day room, covered car spaces and kitchen with a 10-bay ambulance plant room as part of the secured compound.

A spokesman for the Queensland Ambulance Service said, pending the completion of the Bells Creek Arterial connector road project, the facility was expected to be completed by June-2024.

The spokesman said the project was subject to a simple approval process from Economic Development Queensland (EDQ).

“It will be exempt from all other generic planning approval requirements,” he said.

He said the development application was lodged with EDQ in late-2022 and would not require a community consultation, as the land was already designated for the purpose of community facilities.

It was confirmed the station would operate as a 24-hour urban facility, catering to the existing and projected future demand for services in the Caloundra South estate.

It comes as the Courier-Mail revealed on December 20 the state government’s plan to build or upgrade stations in six fast-growing areas may blow out from $31m to more than $53m.

The Palaszczuk government, in its 2020 re-election bid, promised to build an ambulance station in Caloundra to “increase access to emergency health care” and provide paramedics with “world-class amenities”.

A new police station and officers have also been earmarked for Caloundra South, which is forecast to be home to 50,000 people when complete.
