The resident manager of a popular Sunshine Coast family holiday destination will spend Christmas behind bars after he was denied bail for allegedly choking a woman until she became unconscious.

Jarred David Ross, 30, faces two counts of choking and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court via video link from the watch house on November 22, 2022.

The court was told Mr Ross lived on site at the Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park where he worked as the caretaker seven days a week.

Police allege Mr Ross strangled a woman twice at his residence inside the park on November 21.

Magistrate Raelene Ellis said the complainant provided “concerning” comments in her statement to police, saying she lost consciousness after the second alleged strangulation.

“She said she was coughing and gasping for air and started vomiting on the floor,” Magistrate Ellis said.

“One of the photographs provides an indication of what possibly looks like finger marks around the neck and other bruising.”

Magistrate Ellis told the court Ross was interviewed by police and said he placed his hands around her neck that would have likely caused loss of breath.

Mr Ross also said during a second choking incident that whilst restraining her with his hand around her neck, she had become red in the face.

Duty lawyer Liesel Rogan said her client had no prior criminal convictions.

Ms Rogan said Mr Ross could be put on strict bail conditions including that he not go into the suburb where the woman lives, that he have no contact with her and be on a curfew.

“He’s indicated to me that there was (alleged) consumption by both parties of alcohol and cocaine,” Ms Rogan said.

“He has said that he could comply with a condition not to consume any alcohol or illicit drugs.”

Ms Rogan said there were elements within the evidence that could result in a trial and Mr Ross could be at risk of spending too much time in custody.

Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke said Mr Ross hadn’t shown cause as to why he should be given bail and said the evidence was strong.

“The (alleged) actions of Mr Ross are inexcusable and inexplicable,” Sergeant Nitschke said.

“There’s been medical attention sought ... it’s serious offending that requires strong community denunciation.”

Magistrate Ellis denied Mr Ross bail and he is due to appear again on January 20 for committal mention.
