A relationship breakdown has left a FIFO-working father-of-two on the cusp of a stint behind bars after his spiral into drug dealing was uncovered by police.
Yandina boilermaker Morgan Luke McCurley’s marriage woes were laid bare in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.
A police search of his home on June 16, 2021, led to McCurley being busted with 1.52g methamphetamine, 3g marijuana, scales, a hand grinder and a glass pipe.
He was also found with a stolen credit card used to buy cigarettes.
Crown prosecutor Nicola Hamilton said texts on McCurley’s mobile phone revealed he supplied methamphetamine to people on six occasions, with five being actual supplies and one being an offer to supply.
Three of the supplies involved an amount of 1.7g for $350, $450 and $500, two involved a supply of 0.5g, and one involved a $100 sale for an unknown amount.
The 36-year-old also supplied 108 strips of LSD for $1000.
McCurley’s defence barrister Nathan Turner said his client had turned to drug dealing after the breakdown of his marriage.
“(The drug dealing) was to fund his own habit … but mostly it was to supply to friends,” Mr Turner said.
Mr Turner said McCurley attended Nambour State High School and lived with his mother in Yandina.
McCurley helped out at a Yandina store owned by his family on his days off from the mines and Mr Turner said his client planned to “keep working hard providing financially for his children and staying drug-free”.
The Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard McCurley co-operated with police and was undergoing counselling.
McCurley pleaded guilty to seven counts of supplying dangerous drugs, two counts of possessing a dangerous drug, fraud, possessing property having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence, possessing utensils and receiving tainted property.
He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail but was released on immediate parole.
