The Sunshine Coast is set to receive a “state-of-the-art” $44m aged care centre by 2023 after council approval was granted this week.

Aged care specialists Rockpool announced on Monday the Pelican Waters facility had been given the green light to commence construction by April 2022.

Rockpool CEO Melissa Argent said the company was “ecstatic” to get the project underway which will be aimed at reshaping the community’s perception of aged care.

“We can’t wait to move to Pelican Waters,’’ Ms Argent said.

“In the weeks and months ahead, we will be stepping up our community engagement through our involvement with organisations to ensure the development aligns with people’s needs.”

Henzells Commercial Manager Paul Bell successfully negotiated the sale of the 6000sq m Pelican Waters site to Rockpool for $3.3m, a Rockpool spokesman revealed.

Once completed, the facility will accommodate a total of 150 residents split into small 15-resident communities over its six storey design.

General Manager of Development for Pelican Waters, Hamish Pressland, said the new centre will focus on caring for locals who have lived and worked in the area of Pelican Waters and want to stay.

“Pelican Waters can be their ‘forever community’ which is a wonderful thing to have,’’ he said.

“The arrival of Rockpool ensures we continue to be a diverse community, offering a broad range of residential accommodation for all stages of people’s lives.”

The design will take advantage of the views of the nearby waterways including Bells Creek, the Pumicestone Passage and newly constructed canals.

The ground floor will be home to a dining area, cafe, hair salon facilities, theatre, function and consulting rooms, wellness area and speciality health services.

It is estimated the project will generate more than 100 jobs during construction and an additional 200 ongoing local jobs once fully occupied.

Ms Argent said the response to the project had been highly encouraging, with inquiries already flooding in.

“We have started a waiting list and can happily accommodate residents in our flagship Morayfield facility in the interim, and offer them the first opportunity at Pelican Waters rooms when they become available,’’ she said.

Rockpool is now looking to appoint a builder for the project, which is expected to take 12 months to complete.
