The community is rallying behind the family of a “true horseman” who tragically died in a Sunshine Motorway crash.
Matthew Makinson, 31, of Booroobin, tragically died when his ute crashed into trees off the Sunshine Motorway on-ramp at Mountain Creek early Friday morning, April 29, 2022.
A passing motorist spotted the ute and emergency services were alerted about 7am but tragically Mr Makinson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Early investigations indicated his 2018 Mitsubishi Triton left the road east of Seriata Way about 1am.
Heartfelt tributes for the soon-to-be-father-of-two flooded social media and a GoFundMe has been created with the goal of raising $10,000 for his heartbroken family.
Peta Andrew, who created the fundraiser, said she had been friends with Mr Makinson’s partner, Charlotte Mumford for many years and wanted to help ease any financial burden.
Ms Andrew described the “true horseman” as being much-loved.
“Everyone he met was drawn to him and his cheeky grin, he was devoted to his family and his talent on a bronc was amazing,” she said.
The Gofundme fundraiser raised $2,275 in a matter of hours.
Ms Andrew said the “devoted family man” would be glad to see his loved ones were being looked after.
“He just idolised his family,” she said.
“The amount of donations just shows how many people loved Matt and how many people are here to support Charlotte, Lil and their unborn baby.”
Ms Mumford previously told the Daily the popular horseman and talented rodeo rider was her “best friend” and “my hero”.
The pair ran their LCM Equine horse services business and shared a child together with Ms Mumford 20 weeks pregnant with their second child.
“There’s no words for the love that I had for that man,” Ms Mumford said.
“He was amazing.
“He was a hero. He’s our hero.”
Ms Mumford said Mr Makinson, known as “Matty” and “Mako to his mates” was a talented rider who competed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in early-April.
“He was a horseman and a cowboy and a daddy and a lover and my best friend,” Ms Mumford said.
“Life is cruel.”
The Forensic Crash Investigation Unit were unable to give any updates on the accident.
