Maroochydore Road crash: Man dies after mobility scooter, car collide

A man has died after a mobility scooter and car collided at a busy Sunshine Coast intersection in a tragic start to the weekend.

A Warana man has died after a car and mobility scooter collided at a busy Maroochydore intersection on Saturday morning.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed the man died at hospital after he was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Emergency services were called just before 9am Saturday to the intersection of Maroochydore Rd and Evans St, near the Sunshine Plaza and the Sunshine Coast Home homemaker centre after a mobility scooter and a Toyota Corolla collided.

Queensland Police said their investigations indicated the man had attempted to cross Maroochydore Rd via Evans St while a red pedestrian light was on before he was struck by the car.

The 87 year old died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

The man was initially reported to have been taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition but that was later updated to critical before the Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed the man had died.

The man was understood to have suffered a significant head injury and critical care paramedics were on-board as he was rushed to hospital.

A 66-year-old woman driving the car was understood not to have suffered any physical injuries as a result of the crash.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said charges were unlikely to be laid and confirmed the man’s next of kin had been advised of his death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
