Man dies after being pulled from water at Cotton Tree, Sunshine Coast

A 44-year-old man has died after he was pulled from the water at a Sunshine Coast beach at the weekend.

A Brisbane man has died after he was pulled from the water at a Maroochydore beach over the weekend.

Queensland Ambulance was called to reports a man had been found floating in the water just before noon at Cotton Tree Beach, Maroochydore, on Saturday.

The 44-year-old man, from Paddington, was pulled unresponsive from the water.

Paramedics and members of the public began giving the man CPR and then police officers also helped when they arrived.

Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene about 12.30pm.

It is understood the man was seen swimming alone before the incident.

Emergency services also rushed to Noosa main beach on Monday around 8.30am to reports of a near-drowning.

A man in his 60s was rushed to Noosa Hospital in a serious condition after he was pulled from the surf.

Treacherous conditions were experienced at the Sunshine Coast beaches at the weekend, with strong winds and a strong swell on Saturday.

A member of the public who helped pull the man out of the water and attempted to revive him said it appeared that he was struggling in a fast-moving current.

“He grew tired from the fast moving current before he went under,” the man said.

“Three people swam out to get him, took him to the sand bar and began CPR.

“A few others rushed over, heard the ambulance coming and moved him over to the Cotton Tree Beach behind the caravan park.”

Sunshine Coast Lifesaving Services coordinator Shane Urban described the drowning as a tragedy.

“Any drowning is always a tragedy because it impacts on family and also the people involved with the follow up to the incident,” he said.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
