MALENY cyclist James McCormack has been cycling on the region's roads for about the past 12 years.

He said respect from both sides was the key to improving safety.

Mr McCormack said only about 5 per cent of drivers he came across were disrespectful to cyclists, but it only took one incident to have dramatic consequences.

He cycled regularly with the Lycra Lizards in Maleny and they've gone to the police previously with vision of drivers doing the wrong thing.

He said drivers had been fined as a result, but it was only rare cases that action needed to be taken.

"It's just picking a place where you can pass safely and being aware that you can go over the double lines (to safely pass cyclists),” Mr McCormack said.

"I did pause (after Cam's death).”

Mr McCormack said he tried to get out for a ride early, by 5am, to beat most of the traffic and reduce the risks.

"We try to pick our roads and rides that are safe for drivers as well as cyclists,” he said.
