A young man has faced court over an alleged armed robbery where police claim he donned a Scream mask and fled on an e-scooter in Sippy Downs overnight.

Sunshine Coast detectives allege Sippy Downs man Liam James Stephan entered IGA Local Grocer Chancellor Park about 7pm on Monday, November 7 wearing the mask before producing a knife.

Mr Stephan was denied police bail and his matter was mentioned in Maroochydore Magistrates Court by duty lawyer Leisel Rogan on November 8.

The court heard he was being treated at Sunshine Coast University Hospital for unknown injuries.

He did not appear or apply for bail and was remanded in custody to reappear on January 20, 2023.

Police allege the 23-year-old demanded cash from two staff members, who complied and were not physically injured before he fled the scene on an e-scooter.

Officers aided by the dog squad and a police helicopter assisted in the search with several residents seeing the police chopper circling their neighbourhood.

The man was later tracked to nearby bushland off Varsity Dr where he was taken into custody.

During the arrest, police will allege the man struck out at numerous officers, who suffered minor injuries which didn’t require hospitalisation.

It’s understood the Sippy Downs man allegedly tried to grab an officer’s gun.

Detectives charged the 23-year-old with one count each of armed robbery and serious assault police.

Mr Stephan was further charged with possessing buprenorphine and a syringe on November 7.
