Police call drink drivers "selfish pricks"

A Marcoola mum of five has faced court for her “crazy” actions one afternoon where she verbally abused residents, spat on them, drove drunk and then poked a police officer in the cheek.

Kylie Jean Smith-Knight, 47, was parked in her car on a vacant block of land at Marcoola on September 28, when she was approached by two occupants of a nearby house for “disturbing” their animals, the court heard.

Police prosecutor James Allen said Smith-Knight became verbally abusive, telling the pair to “f--k off”, saying they didn’t own the land she was parked on.

“Hearing the commotion, another housemate came outside to investigate and was spat at by the defendant as she was telling her to leave,” Mr Allen said.

“She drove off and returned a short time later to drive past the house yelling abuse.”

Kylie Jean Smith-Knight pleaded guilty.

Smith-Knight returned once again and drove up the driveway, across the front yard and straight over the mailbox, damaging it.

“She left without stopping and contacted police herself to report being verbally abused,” Mr Allen told the court.

Police found Smith-Knight a short time later on the side of the road, where she resisted police in their efforts to retrieve a bottle of alcohol from her centre console.

She recorded a BAC of 0.177, more than three times the legal limit and was driving while disqualified.

As she was being taken to the watch-house, Smith-Knight poked a police officer in the cheek and told him to “lighten up”.

Smith-Knight pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday to six charges including assaulting a police officer, public nuisance, high-range drink driving, driving without a licence, obstructing a police officer and wilful damage.

The court heard she was “remorseful” and admitted her behaviour on the night was “crazy”.

Magistrate Rod Madsen placed the mother-of-five on probation for nine months and ordered her to complete 40 hours of community service.

No conviction was recorded.
