Kurtis Scott remembered as a great mate by Sunshine Coast communities after his death

Several Sunshine Coast communities are in mourning after the loss of a popular young boy who is being remembered as a great mate who loved life.

A community is mourning the death of a much-loved young boy who touched the hearts of many.

Kurtis Scott died on Thursday, sparking an outpouring of grief and tributes from the community.

The Maroochydore Roos Junior Football Club under-10s player and popular under-10 nipper at Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club was being remembered on Friday as an enthusiastic footballer who loved life.

The Maroochydore Roos are set to honour the young player with a minute’s silence before each junior game and black arm bands are to be worn by Roos teammates and club officials at games this weekend.

Roos junior president Grant Wilson expressed the club’s condolences in a statement to families of the club.

“It is with great sorrow that the Maroochydore Roos Junior Football Club announce the passing of one of our most enthusiastic young footballers, Kurtis Scott,” the statement read.

Stella Maris Catholic Primary School Maroochydore principal Peter Pashen said the campus was mourning the loss of the popular Year 5 student.

“He was a much-loved student of the Stella Maris school community,” Mr Pashen said.

Mr Pashen said there had been “an outpouring of grief” after learning of Kurtis’ tragic loss.

“The students have remembered Kurtis as a kind, encouraging and supporting friend with a great sense of humour and a creative mind,” Mr Pashen said.

“He’s sorely missed by all members of our community.”

Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club junior activities director and Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray said the news of Kurtis’ passing had been shattering.

“He was a wonderful young Nipper with tonnes of friends who just loved life,” Mr O’Pray said.

“He was an amazing young Maroochydore man.”

In a statement on social media, Mr O’Pray said Kurtis would be remembered as a “young man with amazing potential, a true character and most of all a great mate to his friends”.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Troy and Sharni, and his little brother and red cap Henderson.”

The club has also offered counselling if required for any nippers affected.

A GoFundMe page was set up on Thursday by family friend Jono Hughes.

It had raised more than $12,500 in less than 24 hours to help support Kurtis’ family with funeral and other bills.

“Troy and Sharni have given so much to this community and I just wanted to do something to show them that we support them and will always be there for them,” Mr Hughes wrote.

A second GoFundMe page has been set up by Mr Scott’s colleague, Jamie Holbrook.

Mr Holbrook’s fundraising page explained that Mr Scott had received a call on Thursday morning to say Kurtis was short of breath.

Paramedics arrived and worked “long and hard”, doing all they could to save Kurtis, 10, but they were unsuccessful.

Mr Holbrook passed his condolences on to Mr Scott and Kurtis’ mum Sharni, explaining the pair had recently separated.

Mr Holbrook said he’d started the fundraiser, which had amassed almost $20,000 in a few hours on Friday, to provide ongoing support and assistance to Mr Scott.
