Kirk John Palmer-Owen in court for assaulting Peak nightclub security

A Sunshine Coast FIFO worker has been jailed after his bachelor party took a “terrible turn” and he viciously attacked a security guard after being booted from a nightclub.

A Beachmere FIFO worker celebrating his bachelor party was kicked out of a nightclub before carrying out a shocking attack on two security guards, which left one with a broken nose.

Kirk John Palmer-Owen was partying with his two stepsons at Peak nightclub on Ocean St in the early hours of November 12, 2021 when he was asked to leave.

Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said when they got outside, two security guards told the group to stand back and both stepsons, who weren’t accused of any wrongdoing, complied.

Palmer-Owen then punched one of the guards in the head, causing him to fall to the floor unconscious.

Sergeant Newman said Palmer-Owen then tried to punch the second officer but he missed.

“He then ran from the scene without any concern for his victims after the sickening attack,” he said.

The court was told the first security guard had chipped teeth, small nasal bone fractures and a wound to his head that required staples after hitting a door handle as he fell to the ground.

That victim reported he no longer feels safe at work and now suffered from migraines.

Sergeant Newman described the assault as an “unprovoked, cowardly attack” on men who were simply trying to do their job.

Defence solicitor Hugh Stitt said the offending was “out-of-character” for his client, who rarely drank alcohol.

Mr Stitt said Palmer-Owen was diagnosed with ADHD and worked full-time as a FIFO planner in the mining industry.

Palmer-Owen pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, which will be suspended for two years after he serves two months.
