A call centre manager from Sippy Downs has been sentenced for filming different members of a church group while they used the bathroom at his house.

The offending of Jamie Kuz, 41, was described to the court as “prolonged” and “premeditated” as it occurred on 10 occasions between January 2018 and March 2021.

Kuz pleaded guilty to all 10 counts of recording in breach of privacy in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday, where six victim impact statements were tendered.

The court heard Kuz would set the camera up inside his bathroom and would film as members of the church group used the toilet.

Kuz was only caught out when one of his victims noticed she was being recorded and found at least seven other videos of the same nature on his phone.

“That's how he came to the attention of authorities and he then subsequently admitted to it,” Magistrate Catherine Benson said.

Kuz went to “some lengths” to ensure the phone was recording and targeted people who trusted him when they were in a “vulnerable” situation, the court heard.

“(Your references) describe you as a person of integrity and honesty, but that is simply not the case,” Ms Benson said.

Police prosecutor David Hoffman said the bathroom is one place where every person in the community should expect privacy.

“Never should a person be concerned that they will be filmed in such a compromising position,” Senior Constable Hoffman said.

“These matters should not be considered spur of the moment, these offences were premeditated and required preparation.”

Senior Constable Hoffman pointed out the long-term impacts of Kuz’s actions on the victims.

“It could be said they will need to conduct a search of the toilet to ensure a recording device is not present every time they use a toilet outside their home,” he said.

Solicitor Gabe Hutchinson said his client was remorseful and “wanted to see justice” for the church members involved.

“My client’s offending is very serious and he acknowledges that,” Mr Hutchinson said.

Kuz was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months for the offending on March 6 and given 18 months’ probation for the rest of the offences.
