International Olympic Committee to announce if Queensland will host 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games

A decision on whether or not Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympics is less than a week away and Sunshine Coast residents have been invited to celebrate the historic countdown.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, top, and Fairfax MP Ted O'Brien are both big supporters of the bid for Queensland to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Sunshine Coast residents can join in a historic countdown to the International Olympic Committee’s decision on who will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Sunshine Coast is expected to play a vital role if Brisbane is successful in its bid, with the region tipped to host several events.

The committee will vote next Wednesday on whether or not Brisbane will host the 2032 Games.

The city was named the preferred host earlier this year.

Residents can don their green and gold and join in the countdown at a family friendly event, Olympics Live, at Kings Beach Amphitheatre on Wednesday, July 21, from 4-8pm.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the free event was not to be missed.

A large screen at the amphitheatre will televise the announcement of the decision live.

“This is our chance to be part of history and find out whether Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mr Jamieson said.

“With the big screen at the Kings Beach Amphitheatre, we’ll be crossing live to Tokyo and the IOC President, Thomas Bach.

“We’ll also cheer on our current crop of Olympians and Paralympians who are representing Australia in Tokyo.”

There will also be live entertainment on stage and sporting activities including Brazilian skills soccer, mini Olympics, skateboarding, basketball, soft-tip archery and a climbing wall.

Feasibility study documents for Brisbane’s bid revealed earlier this year showed that four venues were planned for the region including a new convention centre to host basketball matches.

A Sunshine Coast convention centre could host basketball matches, with a 6000-person capacity and a media centre, while the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Park could accommodate 10,000 spectators.

The study also said an upgraded stadium with capacity for 20,000 people could host football matches.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Olympic committee’s vote had the potential to transform Queensland.

“Economic modelling proves the Olympics has the potential to drive our economic recovery for decades to come,” she said.

“We saw with the Commonwealth Games how a major sporting event can deliver years of employment for thousands of Queenslanders.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games could create jobs across generations in a way that we’ve not experienced in Queensland before.”

Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll said the Olympics Live events were a great opportunity for residents to reunite through sport.

Mr Jamieson said under the proposal, all partners had recognised that hosting the Games would provide a legacy 10 years before and 10 years after the Games events.
