A traffic controller who crashed her BMW while driving nearly double the legal blood alcohol limit told police officers she swerved due to a swooping bird.
Maroochy River woman Indya Rose Djukich, 24, who works as a traffic controller and in logistics, appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 27.
Djukich pleaded guilty to one charge of drink driving.
Police prosecutor sergeant Rebecca Lambert told the court officers responding to the Maroochydore crash in February could smell alcohol on Djukich’s breath.
“At 3.50am police from Maroochydore were called to Bradman Ave in relation to a traffic crash, when they arrived there was a female standing next to a damaged BMW,” sergeant Lambert said.
“She identified herself as the defendant, stated she was driving the vehicle when a bird swooped in front of her causing her to swerve the car, she has then hit a parked car causing damage to her car and other parked vehicles.”
Djukich blew a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.098, sergeant Lambert told the court.
The traffic controller told the court she took responsibility for her actions.
“I’m really, really sorry,” she said.
Maroochydore magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist ordered Djukich be disqualified from driving for one month and pay a $300 fine, telling her “don’t drive until you get your license back”.
