Hinterland man killed in 4WD rollover

A 22-year-old Sunshine Coast hinterland man became the eighth crash victim in five weeks to die on roads around Gympie.

A 22-year-old Sunshine Coast hinterland man became the eighth crash victim in five weeks to die on roads around Gympie.

The fatal accident happened about 3.30am on the 100kmh narrow, winding section of Tandur Road, about four kilometres from the Matilda-Bruce Highway intersection, south of Gympie.

Gympie police forensic crash investigator sergeant Rod Venn, at the accident scene, said the Kin Kin man was driving a black four-wheel-drive which left the road on a tight bend, hit a tree and rolled on to its side before crashing into two more trees.

The force of the accident pushed the cabin roof past the steering wheel, crushing the driver.

“It was like the four-wheel-drive was in a pinball machine,” Sgt Venn said.

“The driver had no chance.”

His name had not been released late yesterday.

The tragedies started on September 4 when three trucks and a car collided on the Bruce Highway, killing four people.

Seven days later two more people were killed when their car pulled in front of truck on the Mary Valley Highway, and last Thursday a South Korean man was killed in a single vehicle rollover near Bauple.

There have been numerous other serious crashes in the region where people were lucky to escape with their lives. One of the worst was a rollover at Goomboorian where six youths escaped a crash in a small five-seater sedan.

Meanwhile, a woman has been taken to Nambour General Hospital after she crashed her car off Flaxton Road and received broken ribs. The crash happened just before 9am and the woman was trapped for about an hour.
