Sunshine Coast gridiron and flag football talent Casey Cubis has edged another step closer to her elite level dream after being selected in the Australian flag football squad.

Cubis stepped in as the quarterback for the Queensland Sundevils who recently competed at the first ever Australian Flag Football Championships in Brisbane over the May long weekend.

The Queensland team finished as undefeated champions after beating New South Wales 26-21 in the final with Cubis leading the competition for touchdown passes.

Following the tournament Cubis was named in a 24-person Australian squad with the hopes of being selected in the final 12-person team that will participate at the World Championships in Finland in August.

“That was the first ever national tournament so it was pretty special to be a part of and it was such a great experience,” she said.

The 37-year-old, who has only been playing gridiron for 10 years and flag football for nine months, first represented Australia in 2023 when they competed at the Asia Oceania Championships in Malaysia.

Cubis helped lead her side to a silver medal and a top 10 world ranking.

“I’m very excited to be battling for another spot in the Australian team but we’ve already witnessed the level of competition and skill increase in such a short amount of time,” she said.

“For me I think it’s very cool to be the first of something and help pave the way for future generations.

“The first national team went to Malaysia last year, got our first world ranking and now to hopefully be a part of the first team to play at the World Championships would be very special.”

The former Beerwah State High School student and Glasshouse Hinterland Lions player said she wasn’t ruling out the chance to represent her country at the 2028 Olympic Games.

“It’s a really exciting time for our sport and it makes me pretty proud to see a real pathway for people playing the sport,” she said.

“I’m obviously at the older age bracket but it’s certainly a dream for anyone I think to represent their country on the world stage.

“If the opportunity came around I would love it but there’s also a lot of hard work to do in the meantime.”
Since participating in the sport, Cubis has played for the Sunshine Coast Spartans (QLD), Griffith University Thunder (QLD), Rockingham Vipers (WA), Northern Sydney Rebels (NSW), Denver Bandits (USA), Queensland Sundevils and the Australian Outback.
