Green light given to new $250m, five-star resort

The Coast’s next five-star hotel will be in the heart of Mooloolaba, after Aria Property Group’s $250 million project was given the green light.

THE region's next five-star hotel will be in the heart of Mooloolaba, after Aria Property Group's $250 million project was given the green light.

The hotel and integrated resort development at 1 The Esplanade, Mooloolaba, was ticked off on Friday afternoon, paving the way for a 139-room hotel, 66 residential apartments, 1764sq m of retail and restaurants, day spa, conference facilities and publicly accessible rooftop bar and restaurant.

The rooftop bar and restaurant will channel the world-renowned Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, according to development director Michael Hurley.

The project was forecast to create about 1000 direct and indirect jobs throughout construction, and 271 ongoing jobs once built.

"We are excited to achieve a development outcome worthy of this landmark site and to work with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to transform this last section of the Mooloolaba Esplanade into a world class pedestrian & family orientated precinct." Mr Hurley said.

"The Development Approval is the first step. Now detailed design can continue with the Architectural, Hotel and specialist consultant team."

Mr Hurley said they hoped to releasing residential units for sale next year and have construction starting in 2021.

Local Councillor John Connolly said the approval was a "sensational outcome" for Mooloolaba, as it looked to re-establish itself as a world-class tourist destination.

"I think it's great for the Coast," he said.

"It's a five-star hotel, which the Coast desperately needs, and it aligns with Mooloolaba being an international tourist destination."

Cr Connolly said the development would also be the catalyst for a new carpark behind the Newport apartments.
