A registered nurse and leader of the emergency department at a Sunshine Coast hospital has been fined after she drank a bottle of wine and crashed in Bli Bli.
Gina Leigh James, 50, had finished her shift at the hospital when she went to a friend’s house after work and consumed a bottle of wine, the court heard.
Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said James then drove home along Bli Bli Rd before veering to the left and crashing into the rear of a boat trailer.
The collision caused James’ car to roll onto its roof.
The court heard James didn’t sustain any injuries and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.227, more than four times the legal limit.
James pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.
The court heard she had no prior criminal history and had made the “most impulsive decision” of her life.
James’ car worth $13,000 was written off as a result of the incident due to a lack of insurance.
She also had to pay upwards of $4000 for the damage caused to the boat trailer.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist took into account James’ remorse and “otherwise good character”.
He fined her $900 and disqualified her from driving for 11 months.
A conviction was recorded.
