COOLUM Cinema owner Noel Atkinson would personally apologise to movie-goers if the old projector in his makeshift theatre broke down during a screening.

His courtesy and manners are among the traits being remembered by his children as they prepare to farewell him.

Peregian Springs resident Graham Atkinson said his dad brought movies to Coolum's School of Arts building for a decade from 1984.

"People have fond memories of the old canvas chairs, troublesome kids rocking the roof on a Friday night, the film sometimes breaking and dad personally coming down to apologise while he frantically spliced the 35mm film," Graham said.

Noel, 83, died on January 13 after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Graham said his earliest memories of his father was him building their home at Peregian Beach in 1966.

"My dad was a completely self-taught man.

"With no trade qualifications, my dad was somehow a bricklayer, a carpenter, a plumber, a cabinet maker (and) an electrician."

Noel worked a range of jobs including a 23-year stint at Woolworths, where he worked his way up from being a teenage floor sweeper to a draughtsman designing their stores.

He also worked at the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland as well as time as a hardware salesman.

Graham said his dad was "in his element" when in charge of the Coolum Cinema.

"Dad would always happily welcome folk to come to the projection box so he could proudly show them how the old reel-to-reel projectors worked."

He said his father was cast from another generation, where courtesy, manners and a strong work ethic were the norm.

"He had a genuine love and respect for allthings great and small.

"This is his legacy to his family, his grandchildren, and to all he touched."

A memorial service will be held at Gregson and Weight in Noosaville from 2pm on February 6.
