A NAMBOUR man who wants to be a Sunshine Coast councillor says he hopes to help his town realise its potential.

David Law has worked in disability employment services for the past 15 years but made the decision to run for the position after hearing about Cr Greg Rogerson’s retirement.

“To be honest, I wouldn’t compete against Greg, he has done a great job and if he was continuing, he would have really good community support, but he has chosen not to, which is where this story began,” Mr Law said.

“I’ve lived in Nambour for coming up on 20 years.

“And I’ve always been there for the community … and I want to help and build communities.”

The father of three said he wanted to rebuild Nambour and create “a community that we are proud of and talk positively about”.

“There is just so much potential in Nambour and I want to help release that potential and bring it to the benefit of everyone in our community,” Mr Law said.

“Nambour changed when the sugar mill went, the retail disappeared and the hospital has now been divided up.

“I’m sure those resources are going to come back but we’ve got to continue to provide opportunities to encourage entrepreneurs and businesses to be in Nambour to be there for the young families.

“It’s about logical sensible development that has consideration of the environment and is accessible for anyone that wants to come here.”

Music is a big part of the Law family home.

Daughters Hazel and Roanna are award-winning songwriters, and join Murray, the eldest sibling, as regular buskers.

They are no strangers to attention, but the family said it was their dad’s turn to be in the spotlight.

Mr Law’s wife Karen Law said her husband’s decision to run for the seat “just makes complete sense”.

“This opportunity at this exact time seems to make sense, it makes sense for him with everything he has done and the satisfaction he would get from being able to do this job and I think it makes sense for this community,” Mrs Law said.

Mrs Law said the Division 10 candidate, who was the first manager of the Children’s Therapy Centre in Nambour, had the skill set needed for the job.

“I’ve seen what he has done in the organisations that he has been working for and how he has improved those and how he has led them through quite significant change and growth and what I believe will happen is that he will do that for Nambour and Division 10,” Mrs Law said.

Mr Law said he wouldn’t put his name forward if he did not believe he could win.

“I absolutely believe the I can be a really effective councillor and make a difference and I’m not going to take any donations or funding so that I can always be very effective in any council decision making,” Mr Law said.

The current Help Employment manager said while he hoped to shift the typically negative mindset surrounding Nambour he also wanted to help the community with their issues.

“What do we want for our community, I’ve got some ideas but what else does the community want to happen,” Mr Law said.

“There’s a strong sense that the Nambour and the hinterland is being overlooked … and I think there is a lot of truth in that, and I don’t want the hinterland to be forgotten.”

The election will be held on March 28, next year.
