A family has been left devastated after finding their father’s plaque missing from a Dicky Beach lifesaving memorial.
Michael ‘Mick’ Flynn, a Dicky Beach Surf Lifesaving Club member who passed away last year, was one of five names to be immortalised on a special monument at the site of the club’s first home in May.
Daughter Melita Flynn said her sister, who had visited the site each day this month, discovered her father’s plaque missing at 5.30am on Thursday.
“We’re devastated,” Ms Flynn said.
“It’s our place for him and for him not to be there (hurts).
“You don’t want to feel the loss all over again but it feels that way, someone has taken him and that’s our special spot for him.”
She said her family had gathered there just last week for a special get together marking one year since her father’s passing.
Ms Flynn suspected it had been stolen, with all the other 13 plaques still in place.
“We all went down with sticks and a rake and have gone through the grass up and down the hill,” she said.
“It’s not something that has fallen off and just dropped there.”
She said her family had stopped passers by and even a council worker at the Lower Neill St site hoping to locate it.
A call to the surf club had also been unsuccessful.
She has also put a call out on social media for help.
Ms Flynn said her father had been the second life member of the club, formerly called North Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club, with his ashes even scattered at sea in front of the monument after his passing in September last year.
She said her father had been part of the club, which celebrated it’s 70th anniversary this year, for 68 years.
“It was huge (for him to get a memorial plaque) and was an honour to have that there,” she said.
“It’s a nice place for us to go and talk to him and we feel close to him there.
“That beach and surf club was his whole life”
Ms Flynn encouraged anyone who hears or finds the plaque to call her on 0407762055.
