THERE were mixed emotions at Nambour Christian College today as half of the prep cohort walked through the school gates for their first day of school.

Unlike some four-year-olds, Soul Limps had been eagerly awaiting his first day as a preppy.

"He is phenomenally excited. He has watched his three other brothers come to this school and every day he has been here for drop-off and pick-up," Soul's mother Kylie Limpus said.

"He would wake up and ask, 'Mum what are the big kids doing today?' and 'What are the little kids doing?', so there has always been this divide between the older and younger kids and now he is joining them."

As a mother of five Mrs Limpus said she was excited to see her second youngest child spread his wings.

"From a mum point of view, I could have kept him for another year but that would have been to his detriment," she said.

"He just loves being where the action is so I think prep will be really good for him because he can be kept busy and he loves learning."

Soul said he was looking forward to the fun activities.

"I'm really excited about prep, I'm going to draw, paint and other things," he said.

Prep teacher Helan Grant, who started teaching at NCC in 2005, said they tried to make the first school drop-off as painless as possible.

"We try and back the transition into prep as easy as possible. We have all the parents along and then gradually, we wean the parents out of the room and try and make that as trauma free as possible," she said.

"We find in about five to 10 minutes we get their attention with stories and games and before we know it, they are having a great time."
