The likely source of a devastating Sunshine Coast house fire which caused the death of a dog and left a man with facial burns has been revealed.

Police sources believe lithium batteries were the cause of a blaze which gutted a home in Dicky Beach on Friday afternoon.

Fire crews rushed to the Cooroora St duplex about 1pm to find the home engulfed in flames but were able to contain the fire.

Paramedics treated a man, understood to be a resident of the Dicky Beach home, for facial burns. He was in a stable condition and remained on scene.

It’s understood a dog that lived on the premises sadly died in the fire.

Nearby residents were evacuated while fireys extinguished the inferno, with a number of elderly people being assessed by paramedics.

Fire investigators met with Sunshine Coast detectives on Saturday morning, with the fire declared as non-suspicious.

Police said they were no longer investigating.

It’s understood secondhand lithium batteries purchased for electric scooters may have caused the fire, however further investigations were still underway.

Police sources say the home was known to police in the past.

Isabella Higgins was working in the street when she said she heard “a loud bang” and rushed to see what was happening.

Tradie Peter James was also standing on the road when he heard the explosion and went to help the resident of the Cooroora St home escape.

“He was inside the house trying to hose the house down, then there were another two explosions,” Mr James said.
